We spent 4 nights at the Hotel Florida in November on recommendation from Voyager Cuba as an alternative to the Santa Isabel. We did not regret our choice. The hotel is at the centre of activity in Old Havana, which can make it a little noisy. However noise is part of the Cuban experience and should be appreciated as a crucial element of vibrant city life. Our standard room was large and comfortable fronting a side street off Calle Obispo. We had a small balcony which was useful for people watching. We found the staff to be charming and helpful. Breakfasts were excellent. We didn't use the hotel bar or restaurant for evening meals solely because there were so many other places to visit wihthin easy walking distance. Bike, Coco and Horse taxis are readily available - Coco taxis are best value for money and fun. The standard of cleanliness at the hotel was high throughout. The standard of our cleanliness varied as it is important to time showers strategically. The hotel does run out of water (hot or cold) at busy times, but this is all part of the fun. It is important to go with the flow (or lack of) in Cuba. We were not particularly bothered by people trying to sell stuff. Of course this goes on but a polite no gracias does the trick. Any hassle was good natured and entrepreneurial! The Hotel Florida is an excellent base for a few days of hectic activity in a fantastic city.
