Very close to the Old and the St. Francis of Assisi's Squares, the elegant Raquel hotel captivates with its harmonious Art Nouveau style. The beauty and sensuality of this romantic ambiance coexist with other expressive eclectic elements in its architecture. Its biblical name and some of its spaces evoke the Hebrew culture. The building was built in 1905 and conceived for offices, a warehouse and a fabric store. In 1908, it expanded to have its present-day look.
It consists of 25 rooms, which have been carefully designed with a great comfort and decorated with paintings by well-known Cuban painters. An impressive skylight rounds off the atmosphere of this charming place. For the most exclusive of tastes, the Raquel hotel offers its grace without equal.
The Raquel is situated in the heart of the historic Havana, a couple of blocks away from the main squares of San Francisco, Armas and Vieja and is easy to find on the corner of Calles Amargura and San Ignacio.
We spent four nights in the fabulous Hotel Raquel in old Havana and it turned out to be an inspired choice. The hotel is ideally placed in the heart of Habana Vieja, has been renovated to a very high standard and is beautifully decorated with local art and marble sculptures. There are marble floors, an old cage style lift and a breathtaking stained glass roof. The rooms, although a little on the small side, are very comfortable and were cleaned every day and there is a 24 hour bar and a gift shop. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful. We were given guidance on the do's and don'ts of Havana and practical advice on staying safe in the city from the barman and the security men, and the lady on the information desk was also very helpful in booking our coach transport for the remainder of our stay in Cuba for us. This was a big help and meant we avoided tedious queues in out of the way bus depots. For a clean, comfortable, conveniently situated hotel from which to explore Havana you really can't get much better than the Hotel Raquel.
