Guantanamo Travel Guide
On the easternmost end of Cuba lies the province of guantanamo, today an eminently agricultural region and the place where in 1511 the Spanish conquest and colonization of Cuba began. The territory, which is marked by its many mountains, was strongly influenced by French-Haitian migration. This ia the place after which the world-known Guantanamera was named. Its enormous bay, 20 kilometers deep and 9 kilometers wide, is one of its most remarkable natural features: on one side liesthe US Guantanamo Base. The Guantanmo region began opening its doors to international tourism through Baracoa, the first of seven villages founded in Cuba by Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez. Baracoa is known as the Cuban capital of wood, coconut and cacao, all of which grow abundantly there. It has come to be identified by an interesting geographical accident: the Yunque (Anvil) of Baracoa, amountain whose large flat top has an anvil shape.
