Located in the Guanacahabibes Biosphere Reserve, in eastern Cuba, is Hotel Maria la Gorda (Mary the Fat), where divers can enjoy crystal-clear and warm waters in 39 diving spots.
This Diving Centre is located in the extreme eastern part of Cuba, in the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, in the Cabo Corrientes Natural Reserve. It has its origin in a string of surfaced land, formed by the waves and the pull of the Gulf of Mexico’s marine current.
Experts consider that the seabed at Maria la Gorda is among the top ten places in Latin America, due to its abundant marine life and extraordinarily beautiful corals.
This Diving Center has 50 sites of high level diving, some are still not named, all of them are less than 1 hour cruise, some at even 5 minutes away. Generally, the are all much more alike, many are suitable for wall diving, but each one has its particular charm. We suggest to you El Cabezon de Ludo, El Salon de Maria, El Almirante y Yemaya, and the second diving of the day Acuario, El Ancla de Francois and El Jardin de la Gorgonia.
Since the diving site is very near, you can do the first dive in the morning, at about 09:00 get back to the Villa, and then second dive in the afternoon, at about `15:00. As a protection measure, the Diving Center makes sure that divings cannot go deeper then 30 meters (98 feet) and not more than 40 minutes dive. Note: A Divers Certification Card is required.

Guanahacabibes Travel Guide
Guanahacabibes is the largest forest reserve of the country. There, the original vegetation is preserved, with a rich fauna of aquatic birds, mollusks, reptiles. In a very small area there are hundreds of lakes and the purest silicon sand beds –99.8 purity—and the largest of the country as well. Pines are endemic of the place. Guanahacabibes is a plane with abundant underground cavities. In this sand planes the crops are mainly of citrus fruit and tabacos rubios (yellow cigar), apart from other varied crops. It is amazing the amount of landscapes and ecosystems: always green woods, beach shores with mangrove. There are large amounts of orchids, 16 species total, some endemic and some recently discovered. This peninsula was the last refuge of the aborigines of the western part of the Island, who ran from the Spaniard conquerors; that is why very frequently emerges rests of aborigine settlement.Maria La Gorda is an astonishing tourist facility with excellent sea bed with the largest black coral reef of the archipelago and the area in which is located, Guanahacabibes Biological Reserve, barely visited by men, with endemic plants, a secure place for birds. It is an ideal place to rest or professional diving with appliances service, and trainers qualified by the World Confederation of Underwater Activities.
