Baracoa Travel Guide
Founded in 1512, near Macaguuani-gua River, the Cruz de la Parra or Vine Cross, was the first Spanish settlement in Cuba. Baracoa served as the capital of Cuba from 1518 to 1521, when the administrative functions were moved to Santiago de Cuba. The same year, Pope Leo X issued a decree which turned the local church into a bishopric.
When the town grew wealthy, pirates attacked and sacked it, so the authorities ordered forts to be built and set up artillery pieces in its defence. Baracoa, is also named the capital of cocoa, it is guarded by an elevation known as El Yunque, a symbol of the territory, and includes areas that have been recognized as those having the largest diversity of Insular Caribbean and one of Cuba’s best preserved places. Its terrain is predominantly mountainous with the presence of beaches, rivers and alluvial valleys stretching towards the coast.
